The notable Murugan temple is situated along the Erode to Perundurai Road, just 5.3 km away from the city center of Erode (via Erode-Perundurai-Kangeyam Road). The temple is perched on top of a small hillock called as Thindal Malai. It is a popular belief in the region that Erode is prospering because of the emplacement of the primary deity of this temple as the Lord Murugan is facing towards the Erode city.

The primary deity of this temple, Lord Murugan is known by several names which include Sri Velayudhaswami, Kuzhanthai velayuthaswamy, Thindal Malai Murugan, Kumara velayuthaswamy and so on. Just like the primary deity, the holy hillock of Thindal Malai is also known by several names which include Thindalpalayam, Thindalmedu, Thindalpudur, Thindalmangalam, Melaithindal, Thindalgiri, keelaithindal and so on.

The entrance arch of the Thindal Murugan Temple is located along the main road. The intricately designed entrance arch exhibits the amazing artistic work of Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Goddess Valli, Goddess Devayanai, Lord Muruga's mount or vahana peacock, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess Lakshmi. On passing the archway, one can find the first shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha who offers his blessings here in the name of Arasamarathu vinayagar. The next shrine is also dedicated to Lord Ganesh who offers his blessings here in the name of Siththi Vinayagar.

The stairs that lead to the hillock temple starts from the shrine of Siththi Vinayagar. The following few steps will take you to the shrine of Idumban. To reach the hillock temple, one need to climb 150 steps (196.85 ft). The first sannadhi on the hillock is dedicated to Lord Ganesha who offers his blessings in the name of Maga Ganapathi also known as Thala Vinayagar. On top of the hill is the main shrine (sanctum sanctorum) of Sri Velayudhaswami is found. There is a separate shrine dedicated to the urchava moorthy (festival deity) is found just to the left side of the main shrine. The festival deity here offers his blessings together with Godess Valli and Goddess Devayanai.
