Fisheries and Animal Husbandry in Erode

Erode is one of the most industrially advanced districts of Tamil Nadu as well as India, yet, agriculture, fisheries and animal husbandry all gets equal importance in Erode. Like agriculture, many people are dependent on fisheries and animal husbandry and hence there are certain developments in these two aspects of Erode.

Fisheries in  Erode

Erode is surrounded by land from all sides and that is why, inland fisheries are the only resource available to the fishermen of Erode. As mentioned, being a landlocked district from all the sides, the fishermen of Erode does not have a chance for marine fishing and hence it can be safely said that the fishing opportunities in the place are restricted. Still with the help and encouragement from the Fisheries Department of the Government important developments have taken place in the development of the different fisheries present in the district.  With the help of Fishermen co-operatives, the local fishermen are being familiarized with different and improved methods of fishing. There are a number of fishermen’s co-operative organizations present in Erode. All the activities of the Fisheries Department in Erode District are guided and controlled by the Assistant Director of Fisheries. The Assistant Director of Fisheries Office is situated in Bhavanisagar.

Animal Husbandry in Erode

Erode is rich in its cattle wealth and the Animal Husbandry Department of Erode District has further developed the cattle wealth of Erode. In general, three major breeds of cattle are seen in Erode District. The different breeds are the Burgur Breed, the Kollegal Variety and the Alanbodies. The First type of variety, the Burgur Breed is smaller in size but they are well built and strong. The Kollegal variety of cattle is known for their road drought and this variety is preferred for road transport purposes.
Animal Husbandry in Erode

Due to the different types of breeds, Erode has made rapid progression in the field of animal husbandry. In Tamil Nadu, Erode has an enviable position in the field of dairy development. In Erode, the Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Federation has a milk collection center and also a processing plant. From the processing plant, pasteurized milk is transported to different parts of the state regularly. To support the growing number of cattle in the district, the Animal Husbandry Department of Erode has been taking a number of measures, which includes opening and maintenance of five bull stations which are used for the collection and supply of serum to different veterinary hospitals as well as artificial insemination centers all over the district and other parts of Tamil Nadu and India. Apart from cattle, there is a sheep breeding co-operative in Erode also.

In the district, there are three Poultry Extension Centers for poultry development at Chengampalli, Polavakalipalayam and Bhavani Sagar. In every poultry extension center, there is a poultry diagnostic laboratory which is focused to diagnosis any and every kind of poultry related diseases that can affect the poultry animals. It is also helpful to prevent heavy losses to the poultry industry. Animal Husbandry Department is controlled by two Assistant Directors of Animal Husbandry and they function from Erode and Gobichettipalayam.
