Tourist Spots in Erode

Apart from the numerous religious places, Erode is also famous for some other tourist attractions. Sankagiri Fort and Vellode Birds Sanctuary are two of the most important tourist spots in Erode city and many tourists regularly visit the two places.

Sankagiri Fort

Sankagiri Fort, located 22 km from the city of Erode, is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort was built by the Kings of Vijayanagar Empire in the 15th Century. During the British rule, the fort served as a tax storage facility for the Kongu region. Apart from the Vijayaagar kings, the British also worked on the walls of the fort.

Tourist Spots in Erode

Tipu Sultan used the Sankagiri Fort as one of his most important military bases, and even the British Army had reserve armies posted in the fort. The fort is situated on the Sankagiri hills, and only one side of the hill is climbable, which makes the location very secure. In the fort, there is a death well, two oil godowns, explosives godown, granary, teo mosques, two separate temples for Varadharaja Perumal. The structures of the administrative quarters of British Army, the cemeteries of British Army can be still seen in the Fort. Dheeran Chinnamalai, a famous freedom fighter was hanged in this fort by the British rulers.

On the way to Idapadi, the remains of the dilapidated Kopineshwar-Angayarkanni Temple can be seen. In the year 1982, Viswanathan Chettiar identified the temple. The temple land is said to have mystical powers and that is why, no one wants to misuse the land.

Vellode Birds Sanctuary

Erode is one of the rare districts in whole of India where more than 30% of the total area is under forest cover. Vellode Birds Sanctuary is a very popular birds sanctuary located in the district and it is only 13 km from the Erode Central Bus Terminus (10 km from the Erode Junction), on the way to Chennimalai. The proximity from Erode city makes the birds sanctuary one of the most favorite gateway spots for the residents of the city. It also attracts national and international tourists for the different types of birds species kept in the sanctuary. The Vellode Birds Sanctuary is spanned over 80 ha or 200 acre of land on a large lake surrounded with semi-dark bushes.

Tourist Spot in Vellore

This bird sanctuary is home to a number of different foreign birds and many types of Indian birds. In the winter, many different species of foreign birds migrate to the sanctuary. Pintail ducks, darters, pelicans, teals etc are some of the birds that can be easily spotted in Vellode Birds Sanctuary. Due to the extensive work done by the State and the Central Governments, the villagers living near this sanctuary are very much concerned about the safety of the place and the birds who come to the sanctuary. These villagers have taken a number of serious steps to avoid any kind of disturbance to the birds coming to the place. The best time to visit the Vellode Birds Sanctuary is between November to March. There are a number of observatory towers in the sanctuary for the tourists. Vellode Birds Sanctuary is one of the protected places of Tamil Nadu.
